Is Anybody Out There Listening?

How face-to-face compares to voice mail, email and social media

There was a time when you could make a sales call and someone would actually answer the phone. Then voice mail changed all that. Now the ability to get through to a prospect on the first or even second call has become very difficult.

Digital media was thought to be the golden ticket to developing relationships, but email open rates have been dropping for over fifteen years. Social media interactions are very small, as are blog comments and click-throughs for banner ads.All of this makes you wonder, "Is anyone listening to my sales messages?"

We think the problem is threefold.

  1. The information explosion makes it difficult to determine what information is most relevant to prospects.
  2. So-called interactive technologies don't generate genuine two-way communications. We're challenged create relevant and unique communications for a single group or person.
  3. It is all too easy to delete emails, ignore voicemail and skip over social media.

There is one marketing technique that can transcend the information clutter and allow you to target and respond to individuals as people, not a demographic.

Consider these statistics.

  • 9.8% — The average email open rates for marketing messages. (Marketingprof.com)
  • 0.7% — Email click through rates for marketing messages (Marketingprof.com)
  • 1.4 % — The average of fans that actually engage on social media, (Adage)
  • 62% — Social media users in the U.S. that say Facebook and Twitter (among other sites) do not have any influence on their decisions to purchase products. (Gallup)
  • 90%-plus — CEOs who said they never respond to cold calls. (Hoovers citing InsideView study)
  • 0.06% — Ad click-through rate across all ad formats and placements (Smartinsights)

Contrast with some statistics for face-to-face marketing.

  • 81% — Average of attendees who remembered visiting a company's exhibit.Exhibit Attraction is the percentage of an exhibitor's Potential Audience who remembered visiting a company's exhibit. (Exhibit Surveys: Trends)
  • 52% — The potential audience that has a meaningful engagement with an exhibitor.Exhibit Efficiency is the percentage of a company's Potential Audience with whom they had meaningful engagement. ...there is strong correlation between the level and quality of meaningful engagement in the exhibit and the results that can be achieved. (Exhibit Surveys: Trends)

Here's Our Point

Let's be clear. We are not saying that social media, email or even cold calling have no merit. Each technique has its value. What we are saying is that face-to-face engagement produces better results and should be part of your marketing mix.

When we think of face-to-face marketing we tend to think of trade shows. However, there are numerous face-to-face techniques.
